It seems like a completely useless set of directives put forth by delegates to the AMA. You can boil it down to this: Race is a social construct and has harmful effects on health outcomes, and it is not a biological determinant.
We already knew that you can be African but not black. When we see you in a hospital, your skin color/ethnicity is reported, not race, because these things do alert us to potential health risks such as sickle cell anemia or Tay-Sachs or particular health guidelines such as waist circumference for Asians vs. Caucasians.
They are essentially pushing concepts that we didn't/legally couldn't do anything about or care about. I cannot remember the last time I saw a patient and thought to treat them differently based on ethnicity.
