I thought it was more like the British, French, etc. are all Europeans. I interpreted the United States of America meant the United States within the Continent of America, where the 'of' part comes from. I hadn't realized it gave them exclusivity of the term. Once again, sincerest apologies for my misguided understanding.

fyi, "the united states of mexico" (well, in spanish) is the official name of mexico if that helps clear up any confusion. their official demonym is still "mexican." our demonym is "american" and people from canada are called "canadians."

the phrase "america first" does not mean the entire giant continent first, it means the country of america (the united states of america) first. likewise, the song "america, the beautiful" doesn't mention anything about the rainforests of brazil or saskechewan.
