Yes, it can take a very long time. Right now there are certain things with nearly a century of mountainous evidence behind them that are still very strongly resisted, even though they've been essentially proven beyond any possible shadow of a doubt and are clearly correct.

It's really something to watch, from a psychological/sociological/anthropological standpoint.
