As a Canadian, while I disagree strongly with the current Prime Minister, I will say that our elections are night and day compared to the states.
Ive been voting for 30+ years and they always have enough polling locations that there is basically zero wait. Ive never had to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes, literally.
Its a simple paper ballot and you pencil in your choice, the paper gets folded and placed into a box. They check your ID as well, and they have a list of everyone that is registered to vote in that building, and cross your name off as voted.
After the polls close, a winner is declared normally within the hour. Votes are counted by hand with watchers to make sure they are valid. Again, enough of them that the process is very quick.
