don't understand why people are so hostile to his position.
He seems to be trying to live up to his ideal of what a journalist should be like - unbiased if possible, open about bias if not possible and stick as close as possible to verifiable facts.
There used to be a time in this country when people held journalists to those standards. When that stopped, and media started taking sides, the nation began degrading.
