SCOTUS wouldn't have ordered the late ballots to be sequestered if they weren't HIGHLY interested in hearing the case. They already anticipated it.

Any fraud in a national election disenfranchises voters from other states.
The US Constitution is the document that grants all election control to state legislators. If violated, it is SCOTUS that must remedy.
This case directly implicates POTUS which means SCOTUS is the obvious remedy.
This case is of national interest and importance, again, SCOTUS is the remedy.
There's the issue of taxation - taxes pay for election logistics, if the election is fraudulent, the service isn't rendered and the tax is illegal. Taxes are levied via interstate commerce and therefore, you guessed it, SCOTUS.

If a state meets the safe harbor date AND follows their legal process, no one in Congress can object to counting the state's electoral votes as they have certified.
It will be interesting to see if there are any election "redo's" for down-ballot races.
But, it won't happen for the Presidential race. That's the reason for the 12th Amendment and the Electoral Count Act: to reach a timely resolution before Inauguration Day, and avoid a "power vacuum".

The 12th Amendment has nothing to do with it. That spells out the procedure for a contingent election in the US Congress if no candidate gets a majority of electoral votes.

In my state, the legislature has no say, per the existing law. It's the governor that ultimately makes the decision, if a Presidential election isn't resolved by 12/7.
If the law doesn't already give state legislatures the power to certify the election, they can't just seize it. And, they can't pass an ex post facto law to resolve it... both of those would be grounds for a challenge during the count of electoral votes in Congress on 1/6.

If they don't make the safe harbor date or commit some legal process error, any US Congressman can challenge their electoral vote certification during a joint session of Congress on 1/6. A vote is held separately in the US House and the US Senate. If they both agree, that's the decision. If the House and the Senate disagree, the state's governor casts the tiebreaker vote.
You can do the math: Democrats will control the House. Republicans will control the Senate, unless Democrats win both Senate runoff races in GA the day before (on 1/5) and the winners can be sworn in immediately.
But, all it will take is one Republican defection (wanna guess who?), and the vote will be tied in the Senate. Pence cannot cast a tiebreaker vote, and I honestly don't know what happens if there is a 49-49 tie.
However, even if Republicans can stick together, that means Whitmer gets to cast the tiebreaker vote for any challenge to Michigan's electoral votes, and you can guess the outcome.
If Michigan's electoral votes are challenged in Congress during the counting of electoral votes, the outcome is essentially preordained. Any success for Trump will have to be prior to certification of Michigan's electoral votes, but in time to meet the safe harbor date.
This is what happened in Bush v. Gore (2000). SCOTUS ruled that a partial recount was a violation of equal protection for all votes, because Gore only wanted to recount in a handful of counties where he thought he could pick up more votes. By the time the decision was handed down, it was too late to perform a full state-wide recount. Ironically, if Gore had asked for a statewide recount at the beginning, he probably would have got it.
In my previous post, I mentioned that Pence cannot cast a tiebreaker vote in the Senate during the counting of electoral votes. But, Pence will preside over the proceedings. Gore did the same in 2001, and ruled against a challenge made to Florida's electoral votes, because it followed the legal process (ended with a ruling by SCOTUS).
FYI this is important because Wayne County is Detroit - the most crooked county in MI. Others to watch out for are Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee and Grand Traverse - all high population with big cities.

What really happens: it depends on the state, and what their law says.
In my state, the legislature has no say, per the existing law. It's the governor that ultimately makes the decision, if a Presidential election isn't resolved by 12/7.
If the law doesn't already give state legislatures the power to certify the election, they can't just seize it. And, they can't pass an ex post facto law to resolve it... both of those would be grounds for a challenge during the count of electoral votes in Congress on 1/6.

As per the US Constitution, by design, the power fully resides with a (current) State's Legislature. A "populare vote" by the people, a pie eating contest, a sweet 16 basketball tourney, whatever, is an advisory to the State's Legislature. The State Legislature has the complete and final say(act) in appointing their Electors. Nothing and no one (by design) can force them, not even State Law, State Constitution, State official(like a Sec of State), not a judicial branch, etc.
Congress can set the time(frame) which States' Legislatures can (lawfully) appoint. Congress cannot tell HOW a State Legislature appoints.

Yes, correct, Art 2 says nothing can override and force a (current) State's Legislature to appoint Electors in any way they don't want to (except they can't of course do something illegal like put Christians in with lions into an area to see who wins.)
Note: No Ex Post Facto Laws as written in the Constitution, applies to topics. It's been improperly narrowed. The reason for it not being narrowed, is without Ex Post Facto restrictions (like congress backdating government worker pay for the shutdown) it changes the terms of contracts and laws.
Example: Say we'll pay $1 for a million Army blankets; and requires a million in red-tape; so no one but one or two pre-selected chosen companies really bids on it; and after the contract is awarded, the gov says ohh we'll give you now a billion dollars instead of one dollar for that.
A "narrowed" Ex Post Facto interpretation has allowed much of this nonsense to flurrish. Changing the rules of the game, Ex Post Facto was a "right" (or abuse) of the nobility(or King) and done away with in our Constitution.
So, for Trump to have a chance he has to win it in the courts. Not run out the clock and let the legislature decide?
Again, it depends on the state. I don't know Michigan law (Spez: I looked it up, see my subsequent comment below)
But, if Michigan certifies their electoral votes by the safe harbor date (12/8) and follows their legal process (which includes the courts), Congress cannot challenge it.

If they don't make the safe harbor date or commit some legal process error, any US Congressman can challenge their electoral vote certification during a joint session of Congress on 1/6. A vote is held separately in the US House and the US Senate. If they both agree, that's the decision. If the House and the Senate disagree, the state's governor casts the tiebreaker vote.
You can do the math: Democrats will control the House. Republicans will control the Senate, unless Democrats win both Senate runoff races in GA the day before (on 1/5) and the winners can be sworn in immediately.
But, all it will take is one Republican defection (wanna guess who?), and the vote will be tied in the Senate. Pence cannot cast a tiebreaker vote, and I honestly don't know what happens if there is a 49-49 tie.
However, even if Republicans can stick together, that means Whitmer gets to cast the tiebreaker vote for any challenge to Michigan's electoral votes, and you can guess the outcome.
Well, that doesn't sound too promising, then.
If Michigan's electoral votes are challenged in Congress during the counting of electoral votes, the outcome is essentially preordained. Any success for Trump will have to be prior to certification of Michigan's electoral votes, but in time to meet the safe harbor date.
This is what happened in Bush v. Gore (2000). SCOTUS ruled that a partial recount was a violation of equal protection for all votes, because Gore only wanted to recount in a handful of counties where he thought he could pick up more votes. By the time the decision was handed down, it was too late to perform a full state-wide recount. Ironically, if Gore had asked for a statewide recount at the beginning, he probably would have got it.
In my previous post, I mentioned that Pence cannot cast a tiebreaker vote in the Senate during the counting of electoral votes. But, Pence will preside over the proceedings. Gore did the same in 2001, and ruled against a challenge made to Florida's electoral votes, because it followed the legal process (ended with a ruling by SCOTUS).
That's a big if, and money is in motion right now to make sure it doesn't happen

The theory is that a crime hasn’t been committed until they certify the election. Trump has evidence that they cheated and he’s basically been very publicly baiting them to fucking do it.
The cheaters in Wayne county are currently refusing to certify the results because it’s obvious the doj and fbi are sniffing around, and that if they do they’re going to jail. Thus, they passed the buck up the chain. Eventually, it may get to where they don’t certify the state and the house gets to pick. The house is republican, and thus would choose republican.
This may be the most equitable solution for all. Not the most satisfying for us, but it is constitutional.

If the states try to certify the results of an election that we know, and they know, is the result of massive fraud, they're busted. Their electors no longer get to choose the candidate. Instead, it's kicked up to the state legislature to perform the job of the electors and choose the winning presidential candidate for their state.
