They do less than nothing. They actually harm more if you don't constantly change them during the day. The bacterial buildup within the mask is detrimental as we are going to see asthma and lung infections skyrocket in the population.
The second part is that they actually increase the spread. Sound counterintuitive? Not when you consider two scientific laws; Brownian motion and the Inverse Square Law. Since the main method of spread appears to be droplets (per the CDC) the droplets actually get broken down into smaller droplets (i.e. nebulized). When you apply the same force to smaller particles, they travel further. I'm going to quote Kevin McKernan (R&D lead Human Genome Project at MIT/WIBR) as he had some additional insight into the harm masks cause as a result of nebulization;
keep in mind the aerosol stays suspended in air longer than large droplets.
So if a 50um droplet with 1000 virions gets aerosolized into 1000 <5um droplets, the later is much more infectious for 2 reasons.
Right, slow the spread using a mask really means speed up the spread. But right is wrong and up is down in leftard clown world.
You see, air will find the areas of your mask with the least surface pressure to resist it's escape. In a mask that usually means the bulk of your exhale escapes through it's sides.
So when you put your mask on you are not only infecting the person in front of you, but you're infecting the person to your left and right, double the infection vector.
That's why these faggots made up some shit about "droplets", yet anyone with a slightly functioning brain would think... "hey what happens when the droplets evaporate? All that's left behind is virus particles, then with each breath virus is being ejected from the inadequate masks, being aerosolized and becoming airborne".
Then you think, "hey... maybe it's better to NOT wear a mask because then that aerosolization process wouldn't occur and droplets would only fall around in a 6 foot or so radius and then people could just avoid touching their face and wash their hands."
That's why they tried to say water droplets throughout riot season. Of course the peer reviewed science globally has been showing it as an airborne virus since the beginning.
yes, we all know this and why it is absolutely infuriating they are pushing this bullshit on us. it is like telling us we can use a sock if we do not have a condom.
Okay, so think about it like this. You are breathing out respiratory droplets, they are big. Like 1,000 micron plus big. Some virus particles are trapped in those droplets.
Droplet contact is like the #1 way flu is transmitted and most other viruses are transmitted.
HAVING SAID THAT, you’re correct that all those virus particles you are breathing out not attached to anything are just floating straight through the mask for sure.
So masks are gonna block some transmission, but not all transmission of the virus. Do I think they help slow the spread? Maybe. Should they be mandated? Absolutely not.

I cannot fend off mountains of bullshit single-handedly. Thank you for the illumination.
Happy to help. I would also suggest following Kevin McKernan on twitter @Kevin_McKernan. He posts a lot of good stuff.
Following Kevin McKernan now. Thank you.

...and that's why you refuse to wear a mask anywhere?
