Hmm. I think a good reply to this is to note that character defamation and threats are not freedom of speech. And that having someone at your university who illegally threatens someone's character to force them to vote a certain way is not a person who should be in charge of any important decisions. Ned Staebler did not represent his accusation of William Hartman and Monica Palmer as an opinion, he stated it as a fact, which is character defamation and is illegal.
It's not protected speech under the law. Harassing behavior is only protected by individuals. And the President is the individual protecting the harassing speech.

Say that as President of the Wayne State University, he would not want to ruin his reputation and that of the institution he's running by associating his name and the institution's name with a felon / terrorist. It's clearly a federal crime to harass, intimidate, threaten, and/or dox people, let alone their families and juvenile kids. All online an offline communication platforms, not to mention all educational institutions in civilized societies across the world, not just at Wayne State University, have policies specifically forbidding such behavior. There is no moral nor legal reason that this kind of blatant and serious violation can be tolerated, ignored, or protected at a highly regarded institution like Wayne State University, a public institution paid by taxpayers' money, while the taxpayers themselves neither approve nor tolerate such deeply disturbing criminal behavior committed by any person, let alone a public office holder, that outrageously and profoundly goes against all human values and decency.
