To whom it may concern,
I have read your defense of Ned Staebler, stating that his threats toward William Hartman and Monica Palmer were his "personal opinion as a private citizen" and that you "defend his freedom of speech". Unfortunately, character defamation does not fall under freedom of speech and is, in fact, illegal.
Ned Staebler did not present his accusations of William Hartman and Monica Palmer as opinions. He did not state anything along the lines of, "it is my belief..", "I think..", or "it is my opinion that..". He firmly stated they ARE racists, and that "The stain of racism that you, William Hartman and Monica Palmer have covered yourself in, is going to follow you throughout history. Your grandchildren are going to think of you like Bull Connor or George Wallace." These statements were stated as facts, not opinions. These are verbal threats to defame William and Monica's character. All because they have different opinions from him.
This is disgusting behavior from someone so high up at your college. I am not just disappointed that you have someone with this type of character working and making important decisions at Wayne State, but that you have the audacity to defend his blatant and potentially life-ruining threats against these kind people who are just trying to do the jobs they were elected, by us, to do.
Good work. Frankly, I think you could have used the phrase "dog-whistle for antifa harassment", or blown his statement out of proportion with your own embellishments yourself. Say that he was meaningfully trying to get Antifa to harass or attack these people.
What Ned said facially was opinion. But that doesn't preclude it from being harassment or threat. If someone says, "I would be happy if someone took you out," that's a threat. To say that someone is akin to George Wallace, someone who ordered violence against black people, is probably an incitement of violence. Especially with him saying it to Antifa members. Ned virtually burned a cross on the lawn of Ms. Palmer and Mr. Hartman while the Antifa black hoods stood and watched.
Again, great work. I've made some people frustrated by me at the local university by merely calling out Antifa students. It's not an easy job, and they will bury everything in incompetence and red tape. Just keep documents ready for when all of the shoes drop.
And be sure to make it clear: it's not about the views he espouses, it's about the violence and coercion he's willing to inflict, and the way this reflects upon Wayne State.

Edit 2: someone answered and I was able to complain, she sounded beat up, good work. Essentially told me to email the president of the University, but keep calling, they are answering!!! Give them a taste of their own medicine.
Edit 3: also be kind and respectful. The poor secretary didnt make the comments, we keep the high ground in both morals and warfare.

Threats and harassment are not protected speech under the first amendment.
Otherwise they would not have policies against it in their student code of conduct.
Ask the President if he condones the behavior of Ned. Ask him what would happen if a student behaved like Ned to another student.
