Palantir is a giant Splunk.

Basically every device generates a log (windows event viewer) most machines operate on linux /var/log and they have a respected application log as well. All these logs are useless if not aggregated

Palantir basically ingest all these logs from multiple industries and companies (big data) then crunch (calculate) the data to provide metrics are areas to improve, track people and etc ..

Here's an example say you're an airline and you want to streamline operations, Palantir would be able to ingest all the logs from fuel pumps to luggage machines and etc... calculates the data and identify areas of imperilment for ground crew.

BIG DATA.

now imagine if you had access to many companies big data and their respected industries, you're paint a nice picture and with that info you can really do damage.
