I remember some of these claims though. The idea being that patients' O2 was so low and the ventilator apparently doing nothing that they kept increasing the pressure to try to force more oxygen in. Which, considering that COVID apparently causes thrombi to form in the lungs in some people, you can't get more air in if there's no blood flow.
That said, like you, I'm suspicious that when this is all said and done we're going to find that 99% of this wasn't just a power grab, it was a money grab.

More should be made of the fact that pets are a repository for the 'virus'. They had to cull 3 million minks in Denmark because they were carrying COVID. Cats have shown to be able to carry it too. I had a similar conversation with a friend a few months back. She was totally for the shutdown where people were not allowed to operate their businesses. She chose to shut down her own business because it’s for the greater good and it was necessary. She thought of herself as being selfless, but it was not like she was even really sacrificing anything because she had been trying to get get out of her business for a year already, this was just her excuse.
She freaking still lives with her boyfriend in his parents home, and they have no kids, so no extra mouths to feed. She don’t have to worry about bills and mortgage like the rest of the “selfish” business owners who wanted to work.

At first they said that n95 masks needed to be reserved and procured for medical professionals, first responders, etc. and that masks wouldn't be helpful for the general populace. This brings up an interesting conundrum: If face coverings were so important to contain the virus, why did they actively discourage their use for months? If any kind of face covering is acceptable now, why weren't they being pushed at the start of this?

I was looking to see if there was one college ANYWHERE in the country that had a good econ program and didn't require masks. They all do. I even looked at Texas A&M because I thought Texas was pushing against it all. Not only do they have mask requirements, they claim that we don't know if people can get reinfected, so even people who have already had covid are required to wear a mask.

Surgical masks block your droplets when you sneeze or cough, protecting other people but not you. Non-at-risk people should be wearing these.

There are studies that have shown that masks help, and there are studies that show that they don't. I would argue that the studies that show public use of masks not helping have been around a lot longer and are much more extensive. My conclusion: There should be no public policy. The argument that there is no downside so we should do it anyway is wrong too. There are downsides to improperly wearing a mask that negatively impact public health.
From what I've seen, the pro-mask studies are always in controlled, small group environments like a hospital or a sick household. The studies looking at broad use in the population always show no effect. But fuck context, right?
Or many of them are based off an assumed mechanistic reduction, and then, they statistics a bunch of stuff. But they don't prove anything or test anything regarding the assumed starting point.
All the masks studies that I've been able to find continue to say that the statistical reduction in infection was negligible.
One tried to claim a 20% reduction in masked population, but that was after combining N95 masks studies (like 10 in medical environments) and then 1 cloth study. THey claimed some amount of statistical know how to align the effectiveity of cloth masks and N95 at some theoretical level, but didn't have any study which actually evaluated 1 against the other, and I don't see how it could compare hospital environment to just out and around. Even then, the N95 studies in the hospital didn't achieve that great of a reduction in cases.

I remember some of these claims though. The idea being that patients' O2 was so low and the ventilator apparently doing nothing that they kept increasing the pressure to try to force more oxygen in. Which, considering that COVID apparently causes thrombi to form in the lungs in some people, you can't get more air in if there's no blood flow.

I had a similar conversation with a friend a few months back. She was totally for the shutdown where people were not allowed to operate their businesses. She chose to shut down her own business because it’s for the greater good and it was necessary. She thought of herself as being selfless, but it was not like she was even really sacrificing anything because she had been trying to get get out of her business for a year already, this was just her excuse.
She freaking still lives with her boyfriend in his parents home, and they have no kids, so no extra mouths to feed. She don’t have to worry about bills and mortgage like the rest of the “selfish” business owners who wanted to work.

What's particularly awful about the whole mask thing is how inconsistent the medical experts were.
At first they said that n95 masks needed to be reserved and procured for medical professionals, first responders, etc. and that masks wouldn't be helpful for the general populace. This brings up an interesting conundrum: If face coverings were so important to contain the virus, why did they actively discourage their use for months? If any kind of face covering is acceptable now, why weren't they being pushed at the start of this?

There are studies that have shown that masks help, and there are studies that show that they don't. I would argue that the studies that show public use of masks not helping have been around a lot longer and are much more extensive. My conclusion: There should be no public policy. The argument that there is no downside so we should do it anyway is wrong too. There are downsides to improperly wearing a mask that negatively impact public health.
Yup it should be a personal choice. Government shouldn't be mandating and handing out fines to people for not wearing a mask.
From what I've seen, the pro-mask studies are always in controlled, small group environments like a hospital or a sick household. The studies looking at broad use in the population always show no effect. But fuck context, right?
Or many of them are based off an assumed mechanistic reduction, and then, they statistics a bunch of stuff. But they don't prove anything or test anything regarding the assumed starting point.
All the masks studies that I've been able to find continue to say that the statistical reduction in infection was negligible.
One tried to claim a 20% reduction in masked population, but that was after combining N95 masks studies (like 10 in medical environments) and then 1 cloth study. THey claimed some amount of statistical know how to align the effectiveity of cloth masks and N95 at some theoretical level, but didn't have any study which actually evaluated 1 against the other, and I don't see how it could compare hospital environment to just out and around. Even then, the N95 studies in the hospital didn't achieve that great of a reduction in cases.
