Leftwing nutbag strongholds are mostly right on the coast, Humboldt County down to LA. Also Sacramento, now. Central Valley and all along the Sierras are conservative, and also some pockets within SF Bay Area and greater LA.
My point is that no, they wouldn't be easy footholds for invasion. The conservative types, the ones with all the guns, would not allow that sort of thing.
