Was Montgomery the guy who had all those hard drives, and was in poor health? I can't quite remember the story.
If it was that Dennis Montgomery, this is a dead end.
Montgomery was a scam artist. Those "hard drives" had open source information on it, and he got Joe Arpaio to give him taxpayer money for it.
It's not bullshit, and it's not a smear.
You can find the entire saga in a court case against Arpaio for misappropriation of funds to pay Montgomery. Arpaio testified in court that Montgomery's data was "junk". There were emails introduced into evidence from Arpaio's own detectives that corroborated this assessment.

Note the date. That's over 5 years ago. This isn't anything new.
Before that, Montgomery scammed the CIA into believing he had developed a program that could find hidden messages embedded in Al Jazeera broadcasts. The Bush administration even grounded international flights over a false terror alert.
Montgomery is a walking, talking, shit-show. It's really easy to tell when he is lying: his lips are moving.
