someone post a pic of the buran shuttle its so evil and heavy looking

2
Paul_Revere 2 points ago +2 / -0

My opinion (I am not an aerospace engineer) has always been that the shuttle was a step in the right direction (reusable spacecraft), but its design was insufficiently updated during its lifetime. And fatal problems like bad O-rings and heat-shield tiles that flake off and let the ship burn up hint strongly to me of poor quality control originating in insufficient funding.

Aambrick 1 point ago +1 / -0

There is something else that does need to be said: If they just lowered the amount of cargo and expanded on the fuel tank(and external tanks) we could have been building an ever increasing space station instead of the space outpost that is there now.

Don't get me wrong the ISS was a good step, but the people in charge, and those that keep trying to limit us to a single planet, have seriously stalled space expansion and colonization. We are just now getting back on track, and if these people ever get in charge again they will do EVERYTHING possible to wreck it and destroy any further chances in the future.

Not able to secure an election is because nearly half of the country is complicit or complacent.

No inspiring feats of engineering and entrepreneurship matter if we cannot secure an election. Even the soviets had a space program. The cheaters want to install a system where the government commandeers the horizon of human vision, that would be an atrocity to all future generations. One more reason we cannot let them win.

It's the ISS, it moves at about 17,500mph to stay in orbit. Also, at that speed you are weightless so it wouldn't be hard to hold onto, hardest part is the cumbersome suit restricting movement and strength of grasp.

3
deleted 3 points ago +3 / -0
3
sgtnoodle 3 points ago +3 / -0

There is still gravity. That is what is keeping the space station in orbit around the earth. You are correct that there is no force working against you, though. Gravity is the bending of space and time. The space station is effectively moving in a straight line through curved space. If you are near it and moving the same speed, then you move along the same straight but curved path, and the relative speed between you and the station remains low. The farther away you are, the more your straight path will diverge from the station's straight path due to space curving slightly differently for you.

On the ground, your body naturally wants to keep moving in a straight line, which due to gravity happens to be falling downward toward the center of the earth. The ground is in the way though, and so it's constantly pushing up against you. So when you aren't moving, you're actually accelerating upward all the time. That is what weight is.

I wonder if we'll ever be disclosed of the great space hoax at some point in our lives. MAGA, and Trump is the greatest person to ever lead the US, and the world, but this has been one of the longest running frauds of all time. Primarily because many people, even some in high elite positions, believe in it since space agencies around the world have never had to give any real evidence or proof (e.g. a go-pro style, straight video from taking off, then making it into space with the whole earth in view).

I would not go camping in the garbage thing NASA claims we landed on the moon. This is one thing I question POTUS on because I do not believe anything NASA claims. I love our POTUS but need questions answered on this topic.

1
Hillary_is_Satan 1 point ago +5 / -4

Seconded. Moon landings were clearly fake, if it wasn't such an important lie I'd laugh about it. Here's hoping Trump is using space force to uncover even bigger lies.

3
montanapede 3 points ago +3 / -0

Fake news has been around for a long time.

3
Indyjamming 3 points ago +3 / -0

I pray it's the "3D chess" being applied here.

1
FormerGraveheart 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don't think the moon landings were fake. I will explain why. There are lots of things we've been told about that are fake. JFK was not shot by Oswald, because all theories agree he was in the Book Depository when JFK was shot (although they disagree about precisely where in the building) and this was behind JFK, and JFK's wounds and the Zupruder film show he was shot from the front. Epstein was clearly murdered because there were too many things that happened right at the time when he died to be explained by coincidence, and there was a huge motive to do so. The high-level Dems are involved in a secret pedophile cult, because of the large amount of small pieces of evidence that all point in that direction, and the larger pieces that are the leaked emails, the pedophile cult in the UK that was briefly in the news and then disappeared, and that that theory so perfectly explains the behavior of almost everyone who's been in power. They are controlled because of dirt on them, and it's a society of people who have dirt on each other.

All of these things I believe because of large amounts of evidence that point to their truth. But I have never seen any evidence that points to the moon landing being faked. And I have seen evidence that points to it being real. And I also know that there is a large amount of deliberate disinformation put into conspiracy theory circles just so that they wind up believing nonsense as well as the truth, so that no one will listen to them. I believe that the moon landing being faked is one of those things.

But that's just me.

4
Hillary_is_Satan 4 points ago +4 / -0

Now there's a free thinking individual, good on you 👍

One word of advice, keep researching when you have spare time. It takes a while to reconcile within yourself that you've been lied to. Wasn't easy for me at first either.

3
FormerGraveheart 3 points ago +3 / -0

Well, it's easier when you know you've been lied to before, about all the other things I mentioned. That's the big step.

While we're at it, can we get an HD camera or two on the live space station feed? Curious how it's still 480p, isn't it?

1
sgtnoodle 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's not like they have Comcast up there! 480p continuous is pretty good for something orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes.

Every few hours, they fly through the "South Atlantic Anomoly" where the Earth's magnetic field is notably weaker. You can usually see sparkles on the camera feeds as exotic energized particles hit the camera's sensor.

1
Core2029 1 point ago +1 / -0

We bounce HD signals off orbiting satellites all day long, every day. To insinuate it's not feasible makes no sense to me.

2
sgtnoodle 2 points ago +2 / -0

The satellites you speak of are typically in geostationary orbit, such that their relative position in the sky does not change much. You can therefore point a high gain antenna at it and maintain an arbitrarily fast data link. The more directional the antenna, the better the signal, and so the faster you can communicate. Geostationary orbit is a very special place, that makes Earth based communication relatively easy. It's also very high up though, well on your way to the Moon. It takes almost half a second for radio waves, moving at the speed of light, to travel there and then back.

The space station is in low earth orbit, and so its position in the sky changes very fast. It goes around the earth every 90 minutes. It's only within line of sight of any one spot on Earth for maybe 5-10 minutes. Without using relay satellites, you therefore need to have at least 45 antennas equally spaced around the Earth. Those antennas need to either be omnidirectional, or precisely aimed by motor or "phased array" magic. Omnidirectional antennas pick up significantly lower signal, which limits the data rate. Most of the Earth is covered in water, and so you would need to have antennas in the middle of the ocean, themselves with high speed network links.

Having antenna ground stations evenly spaced out on the ground just doesn't work very well for practical reasons, so instead the space station has to bounce its data through other satellites when it isn't directly overhead of a ground station. Those satellites are themselves in constant motion relative to the space station, and so once again depend on either omnidirectional antennas, or directional antennas with motors or phased arrays. The space station and satellites have both. The directional antennas can't always be pointed where everyone wants them, though, because the satellites are used for lots of different purposes. With the hardware that's currently in orbit, you're looking at slower than 1990 dialup speeds with omnidirectional, and Y2K DSL speeds with directional. When over a ground station, the station might get "broadband" speeds for 5-10 minutes.

So, I think it's pretty impressive for NASA to be able to maintain a continuous 480p stream!

That's whats so cool about SpaceX's starlink project. They are launching tens of thousands of modern satellites that will ultimately be able to relay broadband speed data between them.
