You didn’t quite understand what I meant by minority.
I said (or tried to say if it wasn’t clear) the minority was those who use the gaming industry to make a living. Aka deriving income from gaming, would in fact be a positive use of your time as it is giving someone a living.
As for balance - games are addictive behaviour and specifically designed to be - and it targets kids specifically, before they can even become for all intents and purposes character developed to be independent agents of their own decision making.
Ofcourse it also affects adults in time of grief who sometimes use it as escapism and then struggle to stop.
Again - everyone seems to have taken offence to my post. But I’m not telling you you can’t play games or that it’s not okay to indulge in some escapism and frivolous behaviour. But the issue is people thinking that games are a net benefit to society.
We all do things that aren’t good for us. My issue with gaming in particular is the inability for some people to call it negative, so there is reluctance to even accept the truth of it.
Sand, you guys are talking over each other but there is one thing you didn't consider. What you say is true for all entertainment. Not just entertainment but sports. How many kids spend how much money on sports in the hopes of making it big and to the degree that they forgo their education, general health, mental health and so often end up with a serious injury? What percentage of clothing, fashion, shoes, cars, watches, phones, and other itmes that are purchased are done so in excess of their actual beneficial need? Capitalist over production and over consumption. Just like very few people benefit from the fashion industy and most people enjoy it to a reasonable degree, there are many people who ruin their lives financially and socially because they are shopaholics. Is the industry evil? What industry isn't evil in your mind?
Anything can be addictive and unhealthy and you will not be able to keep out the evil (referencing stories like Genesis, the palace of the Buddha and even Disney's sleeping beauty banning of spinning wheels or not allowing maleficent into the party). These things will always be there. A person though who is addicted and debilitated has turned to that escapism maybe because of a more fundamental problem. In that sense maybe video games are great because they won't generally leave you in debilitating debt, you can't die from them like heroin, you will not get a physical injury. Maybe your argument can be that a person who turns to video games will not hit rock bottom fast enough?
I don't man, but you are too harsh and judgemental. You also have an elitist air about you because you claim to know you are right and are not open to real dialogue. Maybe you saw some tragedy and just like the person who used video games as an escape, you use this dogmatic rationalization that video games are evil as an escape. If you don't blame the video games maybe you have to take some of that blame on yourself. Maybe the victim was complicit in their own destruction. Maybe it was the outside environment, like failures of the person's parents. I have no idea. The one thing I do know for sure is that your attack on the other poster, calling him in effect evil for perpetuating the sin of speaking of video games in a good light... well that is both ridiculous and not a nice thing to do.
Sport forges real character and friendships - weather you go pro or not.
Video games can not be compared.
The injury part in sport is true, but so are the health benefits.
I’m sorry people don’t see the real danger with gaming. It’s specifically manufactured to steal your time. People joke about being red pilled and a great awakening. What people don’t realise - is that the great slumber that entraps people in a literal matrix style conceptual framework is video games.
Also not being elitist here - I know many people even here play them. So did I and still waste time playing games on my phone sometimes.
But overall - people claiming it can be virtuous in some way - is like people smoking weed and trying to convince people it’s good for you.
Its okay to Mark games in the naughty useless list - even if you play them.
Its okay to do something - and still be cognisant what it’s really about.
Steve jobs himself knew what’s up with cell phones owning peoples lives - in trying to take attention - and he himself even stated his kids wouldn’t get smartphones.
So am I speaking in absolutes? Well yes. We don’t have to praise our vices. This something gamers always do, because they are in denial. You won’t hear a smoker trying to say or prove smoking is good for him.
As for sport - over all - even with injuries considered - the consensus is out - and it’s overall positive. There are entire medical professionals geared and centered towards increasing not only exercise but sport activity. Comparing sport as a negative is just not being truthful. Now sure we should be cognisant of the dark side of sport too. But it’s nothing like gaming.
Also can’t wait for the next bunch of PC culture games to come out and brainwash the youth.
When you suggest I compared sport to something negative you are making a strawman. I say for a minority of people it is decidedly negative and unhealthy.
You are making logical failures when you are appealing to consensus or so called experts who are giving qualitative advice on how to live life. You are also appealing to the authority of someone like Steve Jobs. I'm not sure his expertise in business, tech and marketing translate to a philosophy on how to live or how to treat your own children. If you think societal consensus is an indicator to follow then you should know he is greatly criticized for how he treated people, especially his own child.
Many of what you said can also be said about "reading". The written word has been criticized since at least Aristotle and until TV replaced it as an opiate, it received some hate still. Chess as well, for being a fruitless endeavor (then again the book of ecclesiastes says all endeavours are fruitless). I think Socrates said writing will weaken people's minds as they no longer need to remember things.
Computer games also have a very social nature. Many even more so than sports.
Not only did you speak in absolutes but you called some dude a preacher of evil or something like that. I don't even play or like computer games but I felt the need to defend that. Your arguments are weak and full of logical jumps and I really believe you should be more humble and take the plank out of your own eye before you judge your neighbor for the speck in his.
If computer games didn't exist would the world be better or worse, I don't think anyone including you can say. It depends probably on what the people who are now problem computer gamers would turn to. My guess is something just as isolating and possibly more destructive but I really don't know.
I'm willing to be corrected but you have to work on your arguments if you want to be convincing. You will also be more well received if you don't act like a know it all and don't call people preachers of evil or whatever it was.
You’re using deconstructionist theory (From Derrida) - a form of postmodernest thinking to deconstruct everything. This is a dangerous leftist tactic - often used to win any arguement by simple virtue that we can’t make any positive claims - so long as a single negative exists about everything. (For example sport)
Then you’re using marxist principles to equalise everything - as if each thing can’t be judged on its own merit... a series of what aboutisms - the same way radical atheist Marxists claim all religions are bad - and have to make negative statements on Christianity every time someone criticises Islam - in order to maintain the “balance” of things being “equally bad”. And yet - the huge differences between sport and gaming is again being ignored by you - and instead you accept only the weakest outliers of sport. Yet refuse to accept the absolute certainty that gaming yields little utility and function in enriching or investing in ones future, when it’s such a huge time sink.
And this is all in the name to defend gaming - because you’re upset of the apt conclusions I made about it.
Your other examples are neither here nor there - nor relevant to the topic of gaming - to be frank.
If you want to discuss the rest... sure - but you’re trying hard for whataboutisms to disguise the problems of gaming.
I understood what you meant. More importantly, you are wrong. Games are a net benefit to society. Without a doubt.
Fun is good for you. So is escapism. It is when you allow them to control your life that they become a negative. This only happens with a minority of people. Most of us are doing just fine.
If you do not have some sort of healthy release then you are an extremist ready to pop. You are one bad day from losing control and being a massive net negative to society.
And to be clear, I don't care what you're 'telling' me. No one does. The fact is, people like you, sooner or later, aren't content to live their own lives and just live and let live. I'm old enough to remember when the freedom killing extremists were on the right. The anti-vice squad. Once the right wing extremists were defanged, the same personality type started to appear on the left.
Do you even doubt that if someone gave you any type of control over others that you would dictate how they spend their free time just like people are now doing on the left? I don't. You are the flip side of the same coin.
Playing games is good for your brain. Playing workout VR games is GREAT for your body. Doing too much of anything is bad for you, but it's your business.
If you were happy and living a balanced life, this wouldn't need to be explained.
democrats aren’t liberal. This is a lie. They took this label because they couldn’t market socialism due to the Cold War. It’s democrats that try control people.
my conservative values are second to my liberal and libertarian values based on the fundamental precept of sanctity of each individual as described in the bible.
The individual must be free to his own choices.
What does that mean? If I was in power - no - I would never control what activities you personally are engaged with if they don’t hard others. But yes the companies might have to put warning signs on their products like cigarettes have - and possibly some awareness campaigns just like we have importance of exercise awareness campaigns.
Allowing these companies to freely enslave our youths with no alternatives and education to better recreational activities that have value... is where the problem lies.
And no - gamers who sit on their ass - don’t take part in school sports and become hermits is not good.
When I grew up sport was compulsory for kids. I got home every day at 6:30 pm after all my sport every day. My Saturday was also rugby game day.
It teaches - order -structure discipline - time management.
These days they go home to get lost in games and being brainwashed by these companies on top of it.
Cigarettes don’t need labels Mrs Nanny Stater, or should I use the term ‘Karen’ now that it’s 2020. Do my tax dollars have to pay for your ‘awareness campaigns’? Probably. Also, take your liberal, libertarian, and conservative bullshit and shove it all up your ass so that the stick and your head can have some company.
The problem is people wanting to control other people through collectivism. They decide what is good and bad and decide to make the rules that controls others. First it starts with little public financed information campaigns and then it ends with Draconian laws.
When I was growing up people used their Bible as an excuse to control others. Seems they figured out the very mind of their Creator by reading an English translation of some ancient script that had been passed down for generations through the art of story telling before said stories were written down.
An amazing accomplishment to be sure. As the old saying goes, some people worship themselves in God.
Now we have something much worse, Godless commies have gotten control of the levers of power. They will destroy everything that is decent in their deviant and decadent ascension to power. We will prevail, it will not be easy, but know this -
The moment that battle has ended, we will be up against these poor miserable bastards again.
Though I’m sure that this fine individual in their massive wisdom may allow cripple kids to play video games. Since it is an area that they, and the not so physically gifted, have a chance to shine in team based sports. As long as they listen to his warning that this esteem boosting experience is a great evil to his perception of what is mankind.
Gaming is healthy. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Very, very dull.
You didn’t quite understand what I meant by minority.

Check your bullshit propaganda at the door. And understand gaming is wasting your life.
