Stupid/crooked state's votes should not count.
How is it that we're enduring yet another year of hanging chads? Twenty years after that fiasco.
No mail ballots Rigorous voter ID Record is on paper ONLY Counting machines (if used) must be tested by an independent party - then certified to better than one error in 10 million accuracy before they are available for use.

If we're going to insist on handy "Vote Preparation Machines" that print paper ballots...
Special (and secret) paper in sealed, counted, audited packs.
Special ink.
For the ballot, think "Stock Certificate" - something not trivial to just xerox.
When I'm done fiddling with the screen, my ballot is marked with only my choices. The other choices do not even appear on the paper. So:

Now I get this as a printout. "Joe Biden" isn't even on the sheet of paper. There's no weird QR/whatever. Nice, clean, legible, same ink, everything.
If I decide this is not correct, here's the spot to fix it with the whole official spoiled ballot routine. Or, I personally put it in whatever we're using.
