I think i have the dates wrong for robert smalls. 1839? -1915. Anyway, was captaining a confederate ship while the crew slept at night, rescued his family (runaway slaves) and turned the ship into the union army, which may have been instrumental in Lincolns decision to allow blacks to serve in the Union Army.
