I'm not altogether against cancelling part of the debt. The universities inflated the cost of obtaining a degree the moment they realized that the government was issuing loans. If they went back to the figure just prior to the government loans and forgave the students everything above that amount -- I would be receptive to that idea. Providing of course, the universities then became responsible for reimbursing the student (if they paid over that amount) or the government itself (for the amount in excess of the inflated figure post government loan acquisition).
These universities gouge the students because they see the government loans as a huge piggy bank. They also have oodles of cash in terms of endowments. These communist training facilities need to be stripped of some of those mountains of cash they use to shape public perception.
Let them assume the student debt above and beyond a reasonable amount for the degree. They got greedy; let them pay!
Problem with canceling student debt is that it's mostly held by doctors and lawyers. It's a hand out to the top 1%. The rest is held by morons from wealthy families who changed their major 6 times from under water basket weaving to afro lesbian studies to gender studies to some other useless degree that doesn't actually lead to a job because they didn't actually want a job.
I can get behind medical debt forgiveness because a fit and healthy workforce benefits the economy, the family unit and business.
Hey hold on there fella, my somolian alpha male pirate boat building history and medieval basket weaving is going to be in big demand when the green new deal transforms the world into paradise.

Slavery is not a human right! Fucking Democrats...
Perhaps instead of "canceling" debt we should look into why these borderline mandatory institutions put people into debt in the first place.
