I'm a 20 year officer and every pay grade has their self-serving opportunists. There's a huge cohort of lazy enlisted who see the military as a Federal jobs program. Plenty of inner city types in the E-5 and below, who will not lift a finger unless hounded constantly and told in painful explicit detail how. Then you have these NCOs who have discovered they can sit on their ass and collect a paycheck without doing any real work by being a regulation quoter. You see these types in the Air Force. They'll exploit the ridiculous Byzantine maze of regulations churned out by CYA senior leadership to find an excuse to avoid doing anything. So to generalize this to the officer corps is completely false. As far as political alignment, most of the leftists in the military are on the enlisted side.
Well sir (or Ma'am depending on who you are). I'm just a lowly E7 whose cut his teeth under both Army and Air Force officers in combat. If you think the officer corp is blameless than I really don't know what to tell you. It wasn't NCOs that ushered in the kinder gentler military. It isn't NCOs that retire to kush jobs as lobbyists or think tank members who do their level best to keep Raytheon profitable at the cost of American blood. It wasn't an NCO who became SECDEF then stabbed POTUS in the back. Nor was it an NCO who became his chief of staff and proceeded to do the same. It sure as shit wasn't an NCO who told me to my face that my son would be fighting in Afghanistan because the war wasn't going anywhere, but it was a one star general.
As to who is more leftwing, it's the Officer corps, sir.
"While almost 48 percent of enlisted troops approve of Trump, only about 30 percent of officers say the same, the poll shows."
I'm sure you are probably an exception seeing as how you are here, and for that you have my respect. But you are kidding yourself if you think your fellow officers are anything other than politicians in uniform.
Edited to add: I have fought alongside officers who id follow anywhere for the record. But they are outnumbered by those who have no business leading troops.
He was an officer. Officers are generally not to be trusted. Many are self serving opportunists, it's fitting for them to become politicians.

So lets say a possible civil war kicked off, who would the guys who "do the shooting" side with?
