When I was young and an athiest I thought we could be free from religion.
Now that I've gotten older I've watched so-called atheist replace God with their own various religions, all of it to the detriment of themselves and our nation. Maybe there exist some people who can remove themselves from religion, but not enough to matter.
Yeah the people who always said "Humans don't need god to be moral people" were just very sheltered, and often raised in really good families who were comfortably wealthy and were guaranteed success in life.
I guess it is true that anyone can instill their kids with virtue, but many parents are incompetent and don't. That is why the church is there, to do the job when parents won't.
The two common denominators of every known human tribe to have ever been discovered are this: 1) they all have some form of language and 2) they all believe in a higher being.
This is probably a reasonable reason to believe in SOMETHING - as there is no logical evolutionary reason to believe in God(s). Even if it was just MOST civilizations you could argue that it could be just made up - but ALL of them? Nope.
I think we are created with an innate desire to love God - a "God-shaped hole in our soul" so to speak. It is WHY we were created, after all.
This is the great schism. Human beings ARE. The blank slate, you can change people, is bullshit. You are born, as an individual, with certain weakness and strengths. You are born, as a human, with certain tendencies.
The best systems work with those tendencies, the worst stick your ass in a gulag to recreate you. It never works, the best they can achieve is forcing people to lie and tell you what you want to hear.
