Furries and fringe people tend to really hate anime. Anime people tend to be their own thing and as long as you ignore reddit, tumblr and twitter people, everyone else is fine.
Also, lots of the problems with anime fandom disappeared a few years back. Conventions in the early and mid 2000s were quite scary. All of that has really changed since the Japanese talents and the actual licensors have gotten involved in the cons. It's to the point some cities and venues have bought ownership in certain cons. Big Japanese directors don't want yaoi paddles and orgies at their events.
If you name me some movies or games or TV shows you like, I can make some solid recommendations
That may be your view but tons of normies, conservatives and ofc liberals, sadly, watch anime. It's more of a format than one distinctive style or genre. You can find anything from serious crime shows that discuss human psychology to basically shows for little kids. You got sci-fi, fantasy, slice of life, fighting, horror, romance, high school life.. any genre you'd find in movies.
I think you have only seen the cliche ones. Some of the movies are atleast really good and without any fan service which disgusts me as well.
