I would have died of laughter when he brought up My Cousin Vinnie if I hadn't already died from Donald Trump being elected, Net Neutrality being over turned, climate change, and covid. Oh and gun violence from an "assault rifle."

You haven't lived until you've died from Y2k.

Chernobyl got me. That happened when I was in the womb (on the opposite side of the world) my mom was still really scared she said.

Except Y2K was actually serious before they fixed it.

No, it was NOT. They fixed it "just in case", but as a software engineer of over 30 years, I can tell you that computers don't just start deleting fucking data because it might think it's in the past. That's not how it works at all. It was a non-issue, bordering 'a slight nuisance'.

Our bosses bosses bosses brought us all in pre-Y2K and had this really serious meeting about it. At the time I worked in nuclear energy. During the meeting they wanted to know the implications and impacts around Y2K. We all sort of looked at each other like "you can't be serious". To make them feel better, we fixed it. We kept simulator devices used for testing on the old system. 2000 came and went and everything was rolling along nice and smooth on the test bench devices. Did they think it was 1900 or 2000? Don't know. They didn't fucking care.

The reason is timestamps do not drive workflow, they're simply metadata attached to the workflow. So unless you're a software company that made timestamps, it was not at all even close to being a problem.

The problem wasn’t data deletion, it was time-based systems failing if they were storing the year by checking two integers.

Y2K’s big brother is coming in 2038 and it’s going to be much more serious.

It was more fear driven than it was serious. Not that different from the current SCAMdemic. A little truth blown so far out of proportion is isn't recognizable.

My national guard unit was activated and on standby during that time. I remember the boring briefing we had to sit through. Whether or not it was going to be an issue or not, the military was ready for anything.

We weren't supposed to drink or anything but I said fuck it and partied like it was 1999.

It would have caused damage if left unpatched. Maybe not world-ending, but it wouldn’t have been fun for a while.

I died from Covid, but I still laughed at the Cousin Vinnie remark. Cough it up, fuzzball!

My Dad said when he was a kid in the 1930s they were always on about how they were going to run out of coal.
