The authentication of voters is a first crucial step towards a legitimate election. According to International IDEA, as of 2016, 35% of more than 130 electoral commissions surveyed are capturing biometric data as part of their voter registration process.

In 2017, the National Election Chamber of Argentina selected Smartmatic to validate the identity of voters during the open primaries elections held in August and the legislative elections in October.
