The reddit sub thedonald was controlled by reddit. They over censored and quarantined it. They did this too much in the year leading up to the presidential election of 2020. This caused mods/members to create the thedonald.win. Thedonald.win grew quickly and allowed members to post important information. Information posted on thedonald.win was instrumental in securing Donald Trumps win. Meaning if the controllers of reddit did not relinquish control of the thedonald sub by ruining it and forcing a new creation they could have shut it down during the election. They could have kept control for the moment when it counted for them but their predilection for control shot them in the foot.

You're giving them entirely too much credit. We got too big for them to control. We became too loud to be silenced and too united to be knocked back down and censored. We did that, not rEddit. Our arrival here was inevitable. If you credit them with anything, it was a feeble push from their dilapidated nest, angry to find that we could soar.

Actually, I seem to remember the over-banning and spez's casual attitude toward censorship red-pilled some casual redditors visiting from other subs.

I firmly believe that is why they stepped up the oppression. The slow steady stream of red-pilled NPCs scared the poop out of them.
