Force them to be ridiculous. Wear a paper mask just long enough to get in the store, soon as you get your cart and get to an aisle, take it off.
Keep shopping as normal. If a customer says something, just ignore them. if an employee says something, ignore them if you can, until they have to go get a manager. Once manager arrives, pull mask up and keep shopping, always ignoring them, and I mean, don't even look at them, don't say anything, just pull the mask up and keep going.
Once they walk off, pull it off again and keep going, repeat as needed.
Once you get done, go to self checkout (mask off) or if they don't have it, go to cashier (mask off), if they say anything, pull it up again just long enough for them to ring you up.
Once you pay pull mask back off and walk out.
They key is, just keep moving, force them to literally walk after you, forming a cucked conga line if needed. Trust me, no one getting paid grocery store wages cares enough to make a fool of themselves trying to police you. And once the manager is involved, keep the mask on just enough to shut them up, they will walk away eventually, then mask off again.
By ignoring them, it places the decision of confrontation on them, they have to decide if they are going to pursue you and escalate the situation, 99% of people will not do that, especially if you don't engage them at all.

In the UK I can legally claim to be exempt, don't even need to give a reason.

It's flexible cloth covering I use for work to not breathe in debris. I can't enter the store without it. In NY you will be refused service without something on your face and they'll call the cops on you and so on. So I just lift it up to my mouth and no one bothers me, until yesterday.
