The founders had ZERO qualms about hanging traitors. One big problem with modern day America is that is not a commonly held and practiced belief today.

Today, people aren't accustomed to violence like they were back then. People get sad when they have to apply violence to a situation (you can call this a Jung-ian moment of self-dissociation).
