Most Christians miss the mark on why Jesus had to die. Christians seem to think it is a legal issue. Jesus didn't just die for us, but also the unfallen angels. There has been a political battle going on between Christ and Satan. Satan basically accused God that if you don't follow Him He will kill you. Remember that Satan took 1/3rd of the angels with him. How did God respond? "Trust me, I'm a good guy. Satan is lying!" No! He presented evidence. What was that evidence? This world. Jesus death showed the world and unfallen worlds how the sinner will die. How did Jesus die? Did God the father kill Him? No. It was the separation from God that killed him. Remember when He called out "My God, My God why have you forsaken Me!".

He suffered Gods wrath. What is Gods wrath? It's described in the first chapter of Romans. It's when God can no longer do anything for a person and He leaves them to their own devices. The consequence is self destruction. Mainstream Christianity's view of God can basically be described as a man putting a gun to a womans head and demanding she marry and love him or else. Obey me or burn in hell. Same thing. Makes no logical sense and I'm so confused why Christians believe that garbage. The bible does not teach that.

The universe was designed to operate in a certain way. Outside of those parameters it will break down. Satan's goal is to have us fear God. Jesus showed us that He would rather die eternally than hurt or force any of His creation or force them to obey Him. He died to expose Satan's lie and to ensure the universe remained free.

As for the Canaanites in old testament. While they were roaming the desert God was working on the hearts of the Canaanites. After some time passed God told the children of Israel He would send the hornet ahead of them and move the Canaanites. Israel wouldn't listen though. So God always meets people where they are, and He said if you must do this, then do it like this. Why would God say kill them all? If they had actually killed them all, their enemies would have been destroyed in one generation. They didn't listen though and generation after generation they had to constantly fight. Which in the long run more lives have been lost. Also note God told them to kill all the animals too. The cattle and whatnot was basically money back then. God wanted to make sure they weren't getting rich from stealing.
