upon hearing about the Southern Democrats seceding so they can keep slavery going,
were pretty fucking exciting at the prospect of going to war over it...

We're probably more ready than Northern Republicans back then. They were actually drafted and even had riots about not wanting to fight the South. Plus, slavery issues don't fully describe the reasons for that conflict. I am reluctantly prepared for war, but think about a lifetime of being crippled or deafened with only memories of loved ones. Or wondering if you really had to kill someone that looked like they could have been your friend in other circumstances. It is not a game. We should first attempt nonviolence.
