He wrote a famous reply to his critics in the msm: "it's not the critic that counts, it's not the person who points out how the strong man strumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done better; the credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, and who - at worst - if he fails, he at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." The city was a mess, and true to form, Democrats pressured immigrants to vote for them, literally before these people had learned to read English.
