I am. They shut down the search engine for a reason. DDOS went away. It makes sense to me that if you want to overload a site, you spam the engine that searches every post ever made.
They reopened it and DDOS returned. I stated the theory here before they turned search back on.
Ping u/Doggos maybe. And the thing with searching is, if an API hits it over and over maliciously giving it queries, it might be enough to grind the whole site to a crawl. All the cloudflare stuff wont matter then since that protects the frontend UI part, its no good for databases that get saturated with stacked up queries that accumulate faster than they can get completed.
Or maybe its not per se malicious and its the bad guys wondering just how fucked they are. Or the good guys seeing if we are on the right track and need more hints.
If it came down to a choice, its better that the site be fine & search disabled rather than the inverse.
