I think he is a Fabian socialist (look at his college papers)
Wolf in sheep’s clothing
But he has to play the part and part of that is not making it too obvious. Also, I think the thread of impeachment (and possible treason for FISA abuse) plays a part.
Good points all. I don't remember who Bush had in the Senate to help with confirmations but sometimes the President nominates not who is the best, but who can he get confirmed. I am looking for President Trump to have one or maybe two more appointments in his next term.
I totally agree with you that our Presidents since Reagan have been compromises and victims of the deep state.
Another possibility is he wants to remove all possible appearances of impropriety. No matter what the SC rules, nobody can say it's because the Dems were favored by activist SC. That's in line with what I take to be Roberts reputation, which centers on concerns for the public image of the court itself above almost anything.
Isn't it true that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court must always approve of each case that the SCOTUS hears? What would happen if the Trump team ends up wanting to appeal a circut court case regarding election fraud to the Supreme Court, but Roberts refuses to sign off? How would that be resolved? I do not think he would do that, but then again, look at Judge Sullivan on the Flynn case.
Trump lined them all up to go bowling.
He's probably a happy guy. I think he is comprised, but it really doesn't matter anymore since he's not the swing vote
He doesn't want to be impeached, Which recently was mentioned if he didn't straighten up
Two things I have seen on the interwebs . . .
He is Irish, and wanted to adopt Irish kids, and may have skirted immigration laws to get this done.
The name John Roberts appears on the Epstein flight logs. Is it him? Who knows.
Might be the John Roberts of fox or possibly both

I think Roberts is compromised and being blackmailed on key decisions. But as chief Justice he does what he can to help without being busted.

Bush Sr. was director of the CIA before president.... Hmmm.
You sure Roberts made the assignments?
And last I checked he is chief justice
I think Roberts' Primary goal, way above all others, is to preserve the appearance that the SCOTUS is above politics.
I think he's been riding the middle for so long and now sees the errors in his ways and this is his Maricopa to the people
my reading is that it gives them the most power to make a decision one way or the other
if a liberal justice stops Trump the right would never accept it
putting a liberal justice in the position to make a pro Trump ruling doesn't fly
I would read this as the most political opportune way to set things up regardless of what will be necessary
Maybe they have something on him to flip him back...

I think he sees this as an opportunity to get out from all this BS. So good for him i guess
Either 1 he knows it's 5-3 without him so he'll play conservative
2 he sees this as his way out from under the thumb
Or 3 hes doing this to spite those who want to undermine the court with court packing and defying orders like PA
