It was originally coined by some nationalist in the 2000s, the name is evading me, but then Richard Spencer made a web publication called "The Alternative Right" in 2010.
In 2015-2016 the media used the name in conjunction with as many non-mainstream right wing groups in an attempt to tie the non-rino right wingers to white nationalism.
This sort of backfired by galvanizing all of these desperate groups. But on the left they view anyone under the label as racist due to the originating nationalist and white supremacist views the media tied to these groups.
This media push was coordinated. The wiki page in 2016 prior tothe election was pretty obviously sourced from numerous batches of articles published within 48 hour periods. The media basically brought the idea of the alt right into the mainstream to have a way to call trump supporters and nonrinos racist. It was a coordinated plot by them.
That and the white nationalist origins arw why I would refuse the label.
