There's no cropping happening (except specifics modes) when changing orientation. This is a good point, aren't the pixels the same horizontal or vertical, it just crops it based on the orientation of the phone?

Sensors on phone cameras have more pixels vertically than horizontally. There's no cropping happening (except specifics modes) when changing orientation. Recording everything and then cropping would waste tons of pixels, and sensors are expensive.
Easier to hold one handed I guess.
