I was actually looking into shortwave radios. I saw a website that has courses to get a license. No shit, I was talking to someone on here about it last week or so, and I started seeing ads pop up on youtube for a site that deals with that stuff.

Although, what exactly is the need for a license? Isn't it possible to use the radio without it? If we have a complete breakdown in this country, I don't think having a license to operate a radio would be at the top of the list.

Is it required to buy one? I'm pretty sure I've seen them going on ebay as well.

If SHTF then yeah the license means nothing. It’s more to have now to be able to practice legally. You need the license for operating long range on certain frequencies and using repeater antennae. It costs $70 through the fcc website and is good for 10 years.

Was just wondering, because I've been looking at them, and studying up on what all I need to get the whole system set up.

Thought about maybe buying one now, just to have, if I could find something good at a decent price. No experience in operating it, so I'd still have to learn, then get it all set up.

Wasn't sure if I needed a license to actually purchase or just to operate. Haven't tried purchasing yet, but it seemed like I could just buy it considering the different places I've seen stuff for sale.

You can definitely buy without a license. Check out the brands Midland, Cobra, etc. The license is just for long range use purposes. Useful for your prepper stash but also for boating/fishing group trips, hunting, hiking etc.
