Oh is that "extreme"? Well it actually isn't when you realize men and women have laid their lives down for your right to vote. People have died for this sacred right and practice and those who seek to steal it from you deserve no less.
Now I'm not saying this so we can decorate the National Mall with miles of gallows. The purpose is primarily to scare people out of doing it which the threat of death is a powerful deterrent. Hell, more powerful than five years in jail and felony charges which is a slap on the wrist considering people aren't afraid of getting caught.
I'm being reasonable and realistic about how many people are committing low-level vote fraud. About how many clueless college kids are voting from both their home and college addresses, or "helping" demented Grandma fill out her absentee ballot, or volunteering to collect and deliver (and maybe "help" fill out) absentee ballots for their barely literate neighbors in the kinds of low-rent neighborhoods where college students and barely literate welfare addicts live, because they really truly believe the scary BS they've been brainwashed with (at institutions that are largely regulated and funded by the government). Then you march these kids into prison for a decade or more, for doing what the government-controlled institutions brainwashed them to do? See the problem there? Obviously such a proposal would be political suicide, but it would also be moral suicide.
