1611 KJV:

Psalm 31:18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

89
CannonballJunior 89 points ago +89 / -0

The whole of Psalm 31:

1 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.

6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the Lord.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

9 Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

14 But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God.

15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

17 Let me not be ashamed, O Lord; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

23 O love the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

I am pretty sure Jesus says that when you pray, just do an "Our Father" prayer. Don't go on and on about what you want, your problems, etc. I think there's a time to simply speak to God in your mind or even out loud, but when it comes to praying simply do an Our Father. And don't do it in front of others or in a way that they will see you. Do it by yourself and alone. I believe this is all mentioned in the Book of Matthew, an excellent read as it details Jesus's time on Earth.

Liamd 8 points ago +8 / -0

That’s not what he said. He said “when you pray, pray like this:” and then said that prayer. It was meant to give an idea of the format of prayer.

-Acknowledgement of Gods greatness -Desires for his will, not ours, to be done -Supplication -Ask for forgiveness -Forgive others -Protection from evil

This is like, just barely scratching the surface but it’s basically a guide to praying.

The prayers of David, Daniel, Mary, Elizabeth, Steven, and Paul are just a few examples of specific prayers for specific circumstances in their lives that were not "just do an "Our Father" prayer. Paul encourages us to pray without ceasing. He's not talking about the "Our Father".

You might also check out a Catholic bible, it has chapters not included in the Protestant bible and even Martin Luther (original Protestant) wrote of their value. I think OSV is a good version for Catholic bibles.

This, as far as I know, is Jewish tradition for personal prayer and the one I also follow. It should be audiible to your ears but not intelligible to anyone else that might be near.

Corporate prayer is very important too. This is bold and audible to be clearly heard by those assembled. It includes praise, imprecations, and universal requests.

NASB Version for those wanting:

“In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Your righteousness deliver me. Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly; Be to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me. For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me. You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth. I hate those who regard vain idols, But I trust in the LORD. I will rejoice and be glad in Your lovingkindness, Because You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul, And You have not given me over into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a large place. Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow And my years with sighing; My strength has failed because of my iniquity, And my body has wasted away. Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach, Especially to my neighbors, And an object of dread to my acquaintances; Those who see me in the street flee from me. I am forgotten as a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. For I have heard the slander of many, Terror is on every side; While they took counsel together against me, They schemed to take away my life. But as for me, I trust in You, O LORD, I say, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me. Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness. Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol. Let the lying lips be mute, Which speak arrogantly against the righteous With pride and contempt. How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the LORD, For He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city. As for me, I said in my alarm, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried to You. O love the LORD, all you His godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful And fully recompenses the proud doer. Thank you fren, same to you and yours! Yes, I have always loved the King James Bible - was raised up on it, and I love the poetic cadence of it's language.

There's some thought William Shakespeare was one of those who was involved in the KJV project, though it's not certain. He would have been 46 when the work was being done in 1610.

William Shakespeare lived from 1564-1616. The creation of the King James Bible began in the year 1610, the year in which Shakespeare would have been 46 years old.

If you turn to Psalm 46 in the King James Bible, and if you count exactly 46 words into the psalm, you find the word "shake." If you count 46 words back from the end of that psalm, you will find the word "spear."

It just seems too coincidental to think that it was by fluke circumstances that the 46th Psalm would be translated around the time of Shakespeare's 46th birthday and that the 46th word from the start and the 46th word from the end would be "shake" and "spear." My professional opinion is, Shakespeare translated that section of the King James Bible and he slipped in a secret byline to prove it was his work.

Should note that the word "Selah" at the end of Psalm 46 isn't counted, b/c I believe "selah" just indicates a musical break or interlude, it's not actually part of the psalm. At least that's the way I understand it.

Most of the first 40 Psalms have similar themes. Eg from Psalm 5, I hope Trump prays this every day:

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies— make your way straight before me.

Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.

Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.

I can see how that could be cryptic but that was not my intent. I go through so many posts in the wee hours upvoting and making comments. I didn’t even notice. Keep reading was general. I have yet to tire of reading it or learning something new.

We are to separate ourselves in a sense but we are also supposed to go out and spread the good word. You can be in the world and not of it. Everyone should do that in a way that makes sense to them and doesn’t cause them or their brother to stumble.

Trump is an imperfect man yet God is working through him as he is through many other unlikely people. People need to see and learn Christianity in action and by example which is why Jesus hung around some less than stellar people much to the Pharisees chagrin. It’s pride to think something useful cannot be gleaned.

People are frustrated by the current state of events but some of the comments on here are getting Calvinistic among other things and that’s a much longer conversation on how flawed that ideology is.

I want to write out a short prayer to the wonderful and merciful God, who sent his son Jesus Christ to die for all of us to have forgiveness through Him, for our enduring and loyal president, Donald.

Lord Jesus, please give our president and his staff of lawyers and others the peace of mind to gracefully move through the attacks being launched by the enemy. Lord please give Donald Trump strength and resolve to endure this utmost important war being waged by the globalists against the people of this country. Please Lord expose any wrongdoing and fraud that has overtaken our election, and bring the evil to the light so that all can see. And finally, if it is your will, please restore our country with your goodness, and set us on the right track.

I ask this according to your will, and in Jesus’ name.

Amen. Praise be unto the Lord!

I don't think I've ever believed in God but by God i know that I am being pulled closer to him because i am not evil either. I don't know what it is but i do feel like something is pushing me to god. As crazy as this may sound, or maybe i just find it crazy. I can't really explain more than that.

But since I've been thinking and feeling this way, things have been positively optimistic.

5
Thebear390 5 points ago +5 / -0

I’m not evil either

“as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:10-12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We all are evil and would be no different than the leftists that attack us if it weren’t for God’s mercy to reveal the truth of human nature... which is abundantly sinful. We all deserve Gods wrath and judgment. But God sent his son Jesus Christ, God made flesh, to die on a cross and thus be raised from the dead as an atonement for our sin and unrighteousness so that we wouldn’t come under condemnation. If you repent of your sin, and trust in Jesus, you too can share in the free gift of salvation.

Read The book of John, and Romans. I think you’ll find an answer to what is drawing you

Except the story of God's wrath on Sodom and Gommorah - God was gonna smite them all but Job was able to basically haggle with God over the whole deal.

Sure - Job couldn't find any good people in the city, but ended up being allowed to flee with his wife and kids. The wife looked back and turned to a pillar of salt - but the actual point in there somewhere is that she was saved/exonerated through association to Job.

Why was Job sin-less enough to be spared/consulted w/ God before the smiting of the valley?

I think God has humour and an angry streak that he would recognize in us.. not all of our sins make us write offs.

3
Thebear390 3 points ago +3 / -0

I’m not sure I understand your point. But first let me just say that it wasn’t Job, it was Lot and his family who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah, and we’re offered refuge from destruction.. Your conflating two different Biblical events. Also it was Abraham asking God about sparing people/Lot and his family not Lot himself. It wasn’t Lots righteousness or Abraham’s “negotiation” with God that spared Lot. God chose to spare Lot because he had mercy despite Lots poor choices. Here’s a better explanation explaining the story

https://www.gotquestions.org/Lot-in-the-Bible.html

Chapter 17 of the Westminster Confession of Faith summarizes the Bible’s teaching on perseverance, arguing that those with faith may fall grievously, but they will not fall away finally. Lot fell greviously and yet not totally out of the Lord’s hand. Nevertheless, he lost his property and his honor. If we love the sinful world too much, we may also fall under God’s discipline, and thus we must strive to walk in holiness lest we lose our good name and possibly our livelihood.

1
RiverFenix 1 point ago +1 / -0

You're right - sorry about the Job / Lot mistake.

I think my point was - generally speaking - there is room for redemption for even the wickedest of us, perhaps if there is someone to speak/argue on our behalf?

I think.. initially.. It was a nod towards those of us who may be sinful, but so long as an individual strives to walk in the path of God, or the path God sets out for you.. you'll be in his favor in the end when you're judged.

I think of that story about God asking what so-and-so had done with what was given to him (multiply it) versus those who buried/squandered what was given.. long story short those who multiplied Gods stuff got more stuff and those who buried/squandered it, had everything taken away..

I don't think it's literal, but I think it's basically God Laws (math) that when you put any/all effort into your endeavors they pay you back multi-fold. If you do bad/stupid mistakes it adds up and eventually swallows you whole too.

4
RiverFenix 4 points ago +4 / -0

this has been happening [to me too] for the past 4-5 years.

Was baptized protestant but never had to go to church growing up. My parents are divorced and I have a child out of wedlock - but I'm finitely closer to god than many on the left and those in the church who worship Satan - like the Pope.

I think there are so few of us, God has learned to speak to those few of us who can still be swayed and convinced to lead righteous lives. Give up porn etc..

Malachi 3: 13-16

13 “You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

The Faithful Remnant 16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.

But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 1 Timothy 1:8‭-‬10 KJV

Incredibly relevant to the times

"For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed."

Rudy's press conference made me think of Matthew 5:36

"And do not take an oath by your head,

for you cannot make one hair white or black."
