I actually think Sanders didn't even expect to win. He just ran as a foil to bring the far left into the fold again for the Democrats. When Sanders said he "didn't care about the emails," I knew the jig was up--it was never about defeating Clinton. Then the establishment realized, "oh, there are a lot more progressives than we thought. And they don't like us. Shit, what do we do now?"
I always thought Bernie was responsible for pushing the Dems so far left. He reintroduced socialism into the public sphere and got a lot of young people into. I don't believe Bernie's run was fully organic.

McCain and Romney as GOP nominees were both the result of back door deals with the Democrats. It was obvious a then. It’s even more obvious now.
