The King James Bible was translated in the time of Shakespeare. So it is certainly the most influential time period as modern English emerged. Old English has very little extant writing. Chaucer is a good example of Middle English.

Charlemagne was responsible for the development of punctuation, capitalization and spacing in European languages and for that we must be ever grateful.
