If that were the case there'd be no such thing as strategic reconnaissance aircraft like U2 or GlobalHawk.

As good as the satellite cameras are, they're still relatively far from what they're photographing. Take a similar camera and put it relatively close to the target (i.e. at U2 or GlobalHawk altitude), and you're obviously going to get a better picture. .

I know at least 2 decades ago they could at least be able to read something the size of a license plate from those satellites

The issue is they have a window where they are useful over certain areas

That’s why U2s are useful, they can be sent to a particular place in a moment’s notice
