One time I was mumbling about the seat of the pickup truck my dad was letting me use to get to college being cold in the morning. He didn't get mad, he just told me how when he was going to Iowa State University he and others went outside every morning and got under their cars and warmed the oil pans with blowtorches so they could drive them. So, I never mumbled about that seat again.
I knew it was that level of cold when I'd go out the front door and the screen door just slammed because the 'closer' thingy was so cold. I didn't use a blowtorch but a hair dryer.
So sorry about your Dad. He lived a long and fruitful life. We know this because he was a WWII vet, and he raised a child who will continue his fight for liberty and humanity.
My grandfather fought in the European theater, as one of the first Army Rangers ever. He went out on night missions where he had to kill Nazis with garrote wire. He was there in Italy when Mussolini was killed, and hung upside down. The stories he told me will live forever in my head. I keep telling myself to write them down, to tell my own kids someday.
It's crazy to me that these memories die when the people pass on. The things they did and saw... unreal. Thank God for their bravery.
Sorry to hear that man
Thank you. He was a force of nature, a real classic from that generation.
Sincere condolences, pede. Sounds like a treasure

And to think of what people complain about today.
The greatest generation. Best wishes.
I know my Dad would have been sporting a MAGA hat, whether Mom liked it or not. One of his favorites was a pink 'Viagra' hat.
