In theory it's a good idea. In practice, you would have to prepare for at least a full generation of Democrat rule because the third party would only siphon votes from the Republicans.

Also keep in mind that "more than two parties" does not necessarily mean "party leaders who actually fight." Look at Canada. Every single party, including the farthest one right, is too afraid to enact even the lightest of abortion legislations.
