We definitely need to revamp our visa policies hardcore.
Have only 6 points of international entry (SEA, LAX, DFW, JFK, ATL, HNL)
Confiscate Passport Upon Arrival, which will be given back upon exit (so we intimately know all overstays)
Provide additional documentation for proof of visa they can carry with them/use to retrieve passport, with built in GPS. (Sorry not a citizen. they can’t expect the same rights and privileges)
Require a refundable VISA deposit to make overstaying a visa a more expensive venture than illegally crossing the border (ie $1500-2000)
Lots of other stuff too, but that’s where I’d start.
When we went to Russia at every hotel and on the train you had to show your visa so they knew where you were and to check its validity. It sounds draconian but I doubt they have the same issues we do with visa overstays
They do that in Asian countries too. It’s just common sense! As a country, you don’t know these foreigners, they aren’t entitled to your trust! They must earn it.
I'm not saying we should directly copy what Russia does. But I do agree with periodic checks. I'm not sure what the best way to implement it would be but there are millions of people who overstay their visas and its a huge problem that should be addressed.
Also editing this comment to add that when you fly you already have to produce either a driver's license or a passport. I'm not honestly understanding the outrage.

You're right - America has been too trusting and for no good reason. I think we have to get out of the mindset of being the world's mommy

Make them put a deposit and if they overstay use that to pay private bondsmen to find them.
Works for places with bail bonds. They don't show up to court they get picked up.
Maybe just put an ankle monitor on them :)
