I know the Italians made a detachable magazine 7.62NATO rifle based on the Garand, that one holds 20 rounds.

Excellent pede. Sucks for the ammo shortage for you. Fortunately .30-06 and 12 gauge have never even been close to short around me.
.30-06 is one of the few bullets that is plentiful in my area.
.30-06, .308, .240, 12g, 20g, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 7mm, .38 are almost always on the shelf when I go to buy ammo.
M2 Ball is cheaper than 9MM around me. I run PPU mil-spec and avoid modern .30-06.
