History
Established in 1978, The French Laundry has been owned by several people through the years. In the 1980s until the early 1990s, it was owned by Don and Sally Schmitt. In 1994, Thomas Keller purchased the restaurant from them and it has remained in his ownership until now.
Keller is also responsible for the restaurant’s current cuisine – gourmet French with American influences – as well as its dressy dress code (i.e., jacket required). His clear vision and direction of The French Laundry has also resulted in several accolades including the Best Restaurant in the World in 2003 and 2004 (Top 50 Restaurants of the World by Restaurant Magazine); three-star rating from the Michelin Guide; and the Wine Spectator Grand Award, as well as rave reviews from Anthony Bourdain and the New York Times.
What It’s Famous For
The French Laundry is famous for its daily offerings of two distinct nine-course tasting menus – and each menu does not use the same ingredient more than once, to boot. Diners usually pay over $300 per person, said price of which does not include the service fee for the base meal as well as the additional supplements like truffles and Russian caviar.
With the combination of French and American gourmet cuisine, the menu has included unique dishes like frogs legs on a stick. During the holiday season, such as Christmas and New Year, the menu may also include special dishes that Keller and his team created for the occasion.
Why Eat Here
Emphasis must first be made that getting reservations at The French Laundry is challenging, to say the least, as there is a lengthy waiting list. But when you get the privilege of dining here, be sure to dress formally as it’s a must as well as part of the dining experience.
And the food is truly delicious! Many diners even describe the food and wine pairings as so heavenly everything else pales in comparison, from the appetizers to the desserts.
As for the service, there’s a good reason that the James Beard Foundation, among others, have rated The French Laundry as the best in service for several years.
