Hate to say this, but you're about 10 months too late. Normally, you'd get recommendations to buy an entry level AR in 223, a Ruger AR556 or S&W MP Sport II or a PSA15, but they're almost always out of stock. PSA restocks, I think, on Weds or Thurs. If you're quick and diligent, you may be able to pick one up. The AR platform is reliable, easy to maintain, and customizable enough to grow with you.

For handguns, a standard frame, medium caliber semi-auto. Something with a 4in barrel in 9mm. A Ruger SR9, Sig P320, Glock 19, or a S&W M&P Shield model.

But again, these are all virtually sold out everywhere and the price of ammunition has quadrupled. 9mm used to cost around 10 cents per round, now its 70-80cpr. 223/556 used to be around 20cpr, now 70-75cpr.

You should look up your local ranges and see what they offer for classes. They'll go over the basics of firearm safety, functionality, and simple marksmanship.

Agree, except skip the shotgun...

How will you fire a double blast off your balcony to worn away burglars? /s

Always liked his advice. Just a little nonchalant negligent discharges from our honorable office of president reject Biden.

At this point anything you can get and get ammo for if you have to. Best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. 2nd best time to plant a tree is today.

For the home? For the car? To carry on your person?

1] Small 9mm to carry (m&p shield, sig p365, glock 43)

2] Semiauto .223/5.56 rifle (Ar15)

3] 12ga shotgun

Stockpile ammo. 1000rd of each clambering is minimum for comfort.

AR-15. Without a doubt.

If you have a combination gun shop/indoor range, I'd start there. The employees usually are very knowledgeable, and some of them even have "rentals" to try at their range for you to find out what is best for you.

Gun shops will really help you with the inventory they have at the moment. I bought a new HK VP9 back in June and it was extremely limited back then. I am in WA and they were completely out of glock (my first choice) but I ended up going for a better quality pistol. Prices vary just like anything.. ammo is extremely expensive right now, if you can find any. Go as soon as possible because you can wait quite awhile before picking up your new fire arm; in WA it is 10 business days. Good luck and stay safe!

This is a solid resource (the whole site, not just this page) https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/category/guns-for-beginners/

It’s a tight market right now. Guns and ammo are flying off the shelves. Like no more masks said try to go check some out at a range and see what works best for you.

I would honestly see the advice of some local resources in this. I'd go to several shops , and just ask questions. You can then get a feel as to who is honestly trying to give you information , and who is just trying to sell you something.

I'd also look at going and signing up for firearms safety and training courses, and those same people can give you info as well.

Don't trust me to tell you what to buy, I'd just say " a phased-plasma rifle in the 40 watt range" =)
