It isn't an exaggeration. Rudolph Hoess, the guy who ran Auschwitz, stated in court that he thought two million people had been killed at that site alone. The Nazi leadership planned it all out and were very clear about their intentions, though they lied to the German public. The fact that the Holocaust is being used for dramatic effect today has everything to do with modern political BS and nothing to do with history.
