"But we laid out very specific guidelines for maintaining this country, how could you have still messed it up?"

"Ever heard of universal suffrage, rampant welfare, and almost non-existent border security?"

It's less important specifically who they let vote and infinitely more important why people were given a vote.

If you don't have a stake in maintaining and bettering the country, you shouldn't be allowed to vote. They gave the vote to landowners because owning land guaranteed you had a stake in the country.

If your life depends on the government to the point that you would support overreach and expansion of government beyond its purview, you don't get a vote. They gave the vote to white males because, generally speaking, their vote wasn't able to be bought by government officials.

If we limit suffrage, and we definitely should, it should be on universally applicable standards.

  • natural born citizens only. If you don't live and work in, or aren't subject to the jurisdiction of one of the 50 United States, you can't be expected to serve the nation's best interests and therefore cannot vote. If you weren't born here, the risk to our culture and principles being drowned out by foreign ideals is too great. Sorry, but if you love America, you'll understand the necessity.

  • no felons. If you refuse to abide by the law and order set up to protect society, why should you be allowed to shape said law and order? When and if you (specifically yourself) pay your debt to society, your right to vote may be restored. Imprisonment is meant to be reformative after all.

  • no one living on government assistance or employment. This should be obvious, your vote is directly for sale and therefore you shouldn't have a vote to sell.

This exactly. As long as people think "oh, I'll just vote to give myself free shit and who gives a fuck about the consequences to society", the democratic system is inherently unstable.

Any form of government only works if the people with power care more about the success of society than their own personal benefit. In a democracy, we give power to the people... but the need for selflessness hasn't gone away. Anyone who demonstrates that they care more about themselves than about their society should be a civilian, not a citizen.
