I run a custom build of LineageOS on my phone.

NO google services.

NO facebuck or any other bullshit.

ONLY open source apps.

The phone company can still track me somewhat, but that's a tradeoff.

https://lineageos.org/

It requires unlocking the phone's bootloader, which can be easy or difficult depending on the phone.

Building it from source code (which is what I do) is a bit more technical, but they have detailed instructions for that too.

I have an older Samsung Galaxy S5 that I've been trying to get Lineage onto. Still haven't found a way to unlock it. Any suggestions?

I haven't worked with Samsungs, so not sure.

This is the best place for getting help with that:

Yeah, f-droid is what I use for apps.

Regular users can significantly protect their privacy on a stock phone just by removing or at least disabling Google Play and related services.

Of course, that breaks a lot of apps, but virtually all open source apps don't depend on that.

To get out of the goolag ecosystem entirely, there's the Librem 5:

Note: Google and others can track your phone without location data on using cell tower triangulation as well as Google's wifi hotspot DB.

Oh sorry, I should have been more clear: Google, carriers, and LE know where you are based on the location of local wireless access points.

Including the one in your home.
