I've never deposited by machine, but my late-wife did. She placed the money in a deposit envelop with relevant information placed on it. The issue should've been with the envelope, not with the bill. If this did happen, then it might be because the daughter could not follow instructions/directions.

Newer machines count the money on the spot and make the funds immediately available to your account without someone having to hand count it.
