What's the deal with Mattis?

I don't understand. When Trump picked him everyone loved it. What went wrong and would one be right in blasting him? I wouldn't want to step on the toes of Vets who like the man. Help a pede understand

I used to have a lot of respect for him, but he proved himself to be a traitor and a backstabber. Most fellow veterans I know also no longer respect him.
